A Simple Guide to Using LinkedIn

Ever wondered where to get started with LinkedIn? This platform can sometimes be challenging to creative students, so we are here to help you make a great impression to employers!

If you are unfamiliar with LinkedIn, it is pretty much an online CV. You can use it to create your own record of education, previous jobs, work experience and achievements. The platform can also be used to search for jobs and connect with employers, which can help you to get your foot in the door.

Jess Brown, founder of the online platform, Creative Graduate, has some great tips on how you can use LinkedIn to your advantage, hopefully landing yourself some fantastic work placements and opportunities!

Interact with others

As with any platform, you should regularly use your account, frequently reaching out to others, as Jess explains."It's still social media even though it's professionally orientated, so be social!" This could be by reaching out to employers, or simply just those you admire.

"Reach out and connect with like-minded people by asking to connect with a message telling them why you want to connect with them (e.g. are you a fan of their work?)," explains Jess. After all, they may offer you some great advice and insights into your ideal career.

Be active!

You should post frequently if you want to be noticed, believes Jess. "Post at the very least once every couple of months, but more regularly is better!" This could include posting about your achievements or even blogging on the platform (which is a great feature to use if you want to go into a writing related career!)

It is even more important to keep your profile updated, advises Jess. "Keep it up to date - your profile may be used as your CV, so make sure it's reflective of yourself now, not two, three, five years ago!"

Use LinkedIn Learning

If you have some spare time on your hands and fancy picking up a few new skills, Jess believes that LinkedIn Learning is the perfect place to do so."It is a really valuable resource and you can get a certificate on your profile once you've finished a course!" She added: "I'd really recommend this if there's something in your field you don't have as much experience with, as it shows you are proactive to learn."

You can have one month free on LinkedIn Learning before deciding to commit further. When Aspiring Creative checked this out, we were impressed with the amount of creative courses on there, from illustration to 2D animation, photoshop tutorials and more!
